Final Vanity Search

To rap up this semester, I decided to perform a final Google Vanity search and see if my juice has risen. Surprisingly enough, not only have I dropped from my current position, I'm no longer in the top 150 results! This truly confuses me, for using all of the information I've learned about Google and its algorithm, I don't understand how I would have more juice halfway through the course and now not even be in the top 150.

On the other hand, Nate Denver from California, founder of the band "Nate Denver's Neck" has really taken off on Google.

Comments on Trevor Costelo's blog

While browsing the classmates blog, I noticed that Trevor not only saw Alex on Sportscenter yesterday, but posted a blog about it. Congratulations to Alex for being interviewed on ESPN, and congratulations to Trevor for posting a blog.

The Last Waltz Wikipedia edit #3 and summary

For my final edit on the Wikipedia article on "The Last Waltz," I simply added a link for "The Band" to their Wikipedia page. Like others, this article is very extensive and if anything I hope I can make it easier for at least one reader looking to learn more about The Band itself.

I was challenged with this article while looking for changes to make or information to add. Although it is not updated that regularly, it is very extensive and a worthwhile read. The concert itself was an amazing show and the film does a great job displaying it in it's entirety.

The Roots Wikipedia edit #3 and summary

For the Wikipedia article on "The Roots," I simply created links to their album "Illadelph Halflife," and "Grammy." I didn't add anything exceptional to this website, just a few links here and there.

The biggest challenge I faced with this article is it's lack of missing material to add. The Roots have a very strong online following due to the website Okayplayer, therefore their Wikipedia article is updated regularly. Okayplayer is run very similar to www.TimWooleyRacing.com, only blog updates and discussion boards focus on hip hop music. The Roots Wikipedia article is very extensive and up-to-date, and probably the best Wikipedia article that I have seen.

Lewes, De Wikipedia edit #3 and summary

For my third and final edit of the Lewes, De Wikipedia article, I simply added links to "Delaware" and "Rehoboth Canal." If anyone is browsing the Lewes article and wants to know more about either of these they now can easily click and find out what they need to know.

As for the rest of the semester I am fed up with the people that have edited this site. I've lived in Lewes my entire life and for my first two edits I added current events that I not only find interesting, but are significant events in the history of the town. Both of these edits were erased immediately by people that have never even seen the town, one of which who lives in Minnesota. All I can ask about this is "what gives?"

Cape Henlopen Wikipedia edit #3 and summary.

For my third and final edit of the Cape Henlopen State Park Wikipedia article, I corrected a sentence about the annual state park passes. The park passes can be purchased at any one of the parks and grant the buyer access to any state park in Delaware. The Wikipedia article informs that these passes give the buy access to any state beach in Delaware, I simply added that they provide access to any state park as well.

Over the duration of the class, I have noticed that hardly anyone has edited this article besides me. It is a thorough article, and there is not much else that needs to be added.

New Page Elements

Today in class we discussed Google AdSense and how to add it to a blog. After adding the AdSense I didn't stop there. First I uploaded a picture of myself, then decided to further explore the blog. I stumbled upon a automatically updated news reel sponsored by Google. This news reel allows its user to search for news related to any interest. While experimenting I searched for the Philadelphia Phillies (who are about to hit a winning streak I can feel it). My blog now has live update news articles on the Phillies, including box scores. Although I can't find a way to change the link color to one that would stand out from my background, it is still a neat addition to my blog.

The Roots Wikipedia edit # 2

The Roots Wikipedia article is very in-depth, so it was difficult to add information worth adding. I did notice that they are playing at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, IL this summer. I hyperlinked this to the Lollapalooza Wikipedia article to inform any readers that might be interested in more information.

I forgot to sign-on to Wikipedia and my username does not show up on the history.

The Last Waltz Wikipedia edit #2

I had trouble finding any information not included to edit in this article. I noticed at the bottom there is a chart made for all of the songs performed. I edited the chart to make wiki-links to a lot of the bands. It is easy to link a word or name to another Wikipedia article, just add [[ ]] around the object to be linked.

*edit

I forgot to sign-on to Wikipedia and my username does not show up on the history.

Lewes Delaware Wikipedia edit #2

In the Lewes Delaware article there is a small paragraph about the Fisherman's Wharf, a small dock on the Rehoboth Canal. Recently an arsonist burnt down the restaurant and bar "Irish Eyes." I added this story to the article.

*edit

I forgot to sign-in to Wikipedia so my username does not show up on the history.

Cape Henlopen Wikipedia edit #2

Since the Delaware State Parks summer season started Tuesday, I figured it would be appropriate to edit the Cape Henlopen State Park Article. I noticed that the article provides price information for in-state season passes but not out-of-state. I edited in the out-of-state information.

*edit
I just realized that I had forgotten to sign-on to Wikipedia and my edit did not save on the history.

Wikipedia #4

Four my fourth edit of a Wikipedia article, I updated the "Cape Henlopen State Park." The Cape Henlopen State Park is located in my hometown of Lewes, De and is famous for its historical sites and great beaches. Starting April 5th, a beach in the state park is closing in order to rebuild two 300 ft groins that were originally built in 1950. I updated the timeline of the article.

Class discussion Friday, April 20th

In last Friday's class, the founder of www.hostmysite.com came and spoke to our class. He was a University of Delaware graduate and started his website will still in school. His story is very interesting, and I learned a lot about how websites are hosted. Due to his emphasis on customer service, I'm sure that his website has a strong future.

Google's new service

While browsing the Clickz blog, I found an article about Google's new service. The ever-expanding Google is currently experimenting with a voice-based search service for local business listings. This service is similar to yellow pages only it can be accessed with a telephone. Although operators and directories have been around for years this new service is free for all users. This service is in preliminary stages, but talks of using it for advertising space have been made.

Wikipedia # 3

One of the wikipedia articles I have chosen to edit is on the concert documentary "The Last Waltz." The Last Waltz features the last concert by the band "The Band." It features many musicians including Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, along with many more. The Wikipedia article explaining this documentary is very in-depth. There is a section on critical aclaim of the documentary, and I added a small part from the Rotten Tomatoes website.

Google Vanity Search #2

I just did another vanity search on Google. My blog has moved from the 28th place to the 18th place under the search "Nate Denver."

Left hand side of the blog

Today I added all of the required information from class to the left hand side of my blog. I included some about me and links to my teammates' blogs, my required class blogs and my wikipedia articles. My blog is starting to look a little bit more serious.

stiuqxela?

stiuqxela

The purpose of this experiment is to see how much power our class blogs have on Google. If all goes well there will be a link between the word stiuqxela and the Green Bay Packers website www.packers.com.

March 9th class topic

On Friday, March 9th we discussed business blogging tips. One story in which I found very interesting was the one of Thomas Mahon of English Cut Tailors. It is hard to believe that a person's small business, especially one as unrelated to computers as suit making can create such a buzz simply by blogging. I just checked, and they still have enough Google juice to come up first on the search for "Savile Row Tailors."

Blocked in China

I was browsing my classmates posts, and stumbled upon a post by Sean Cullen on his blog "Cullenscopy." I found his post very interesting, for he claims that his blog is blocked by Chinese firewalls, yet everyone's favorite Barbaro related site is not. I followed the link to see if my blog is blocked also.

After entering my address, I have determined that Nate Denver's Blog can not be seen in China either. Thank god we're in America.

Google knew what they were getting into

I have recently read the article "Yahoo and YouTube" on the John Battelle's Search blog and he was basically commenting on this blog. The author of this article has an interesting theory on the Google/YouTube lawsuit. He believes that Google knew that the law suites would come before purchasing YouTube. Google wanted to own all rights to online videos, and knew that YouTube is the powerhouse. They also knew that a YouTube legal battle would take place any minute and YouTube did not have the lawyers to win. Google on the other hand does, and now that the deal has been made, not only will YouTube prosper, Google will reap the advertising benefits.

The author states "Letting YouTube fight this battle alone with their own lawyers might have resulted in a very public and unnecessary loss that would have crippled Google’s video ambitions and possibly caused collateral damage to a bunch of related industries (especially search)."

This is an interesting theory and makes a lot of sense.

Google Vanity Search

I recently did a Google Search for "Nate Denver" and this blog came up as the 28th item. I will continue to post, and hopefully by the end of the semester it will be closer to #1.

Viacom/Youtube legal feud

Viacom, one of the largest mass media conglomerates in the US, is suing Youtube for 1 billion dollars on the terms of copy right infringement. Viacom recently requested Youtube to remove 100,000 clips. Youtube complied and removed the clips, but have added 60,000 clips that Viacom claims to own the copy writes to since then. Ultimately, Viacom would like a portion of the ad revenue that Youtube receives, but Youtube refuses to share. Youtube made a public rebuttal the suite by claiming "We are confident that YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders and believe the courts will agree....We will certainly not let this suit become a distraction to the continuing growth and strong performance of YouTube and its ability to attract more users, more traffic and build a stronger community."

The article was found on the Clickz Internet Marketing Solutions for Marketers at http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3625232

Google blog search subscription

I have recently subscribed to the Google blog search of the the Philadelphia Eagles. I am a big Eagles fan and this search is great because it gives me updates on the Eagles' off season activity. Subscribing to the search was easier than I had anticipated, it only took me one try.

Wikipedia Post #2

For my second Wikipedia article edit, I chose to change the details on the article about "The Roots," one of my favorite bands. The Roots are a live hip hop band from Philadelphia, PA backed by the drummer ?uestlove and fronted by the MC Black Thought. They have been nominated for many grammys and won best hip hop single in 1999 for "You Got Me" featuring Erika Badu. On top of consistently good albums, The Roots are famous for their live shows.

The Wikipedia article on the Roots is very well written, but I noticed that it does not credit a guest appearance by Musiq Soulchild on the single "Break You Off". I edited his name in, hopefully it won't be immediately deleted like my last edit.

Wikipedia posting is rediculous

This post is to follow up my Wikipedia post on my home town, Lewes, De. My previous edit was deleted only two minutes after I posted it due on the basis of "Removed unsourced statement that didn't enhance article" by a poster named "Articnomad." After doing research on the articnomad by clicking on his profile, I have found that he is from Washington, DC. I have jumped to the conclusion that he is a seasonal visitor. People like him are probably the reason that the Lewes, De article is so uninformative and its features include its closeness to the Rehoboth outlet malls rather than proud cultural monuments.

Wikipedia post #1

I have recently edited a Wikipedia article on my hometown, Lewes, De. The Wikipedia article is not very informative, for it does a poor job summarizing Lewes' rich history. Last summer the town of Lewes celebrated its 375th anniversity with a parade on 2nd St. The town and its residents take a lot of pride in its heritage. I made a small post relaying this information.

Wikipedia is a lot easier to use then I had anticipated.
